Why you need a lawyer if you've sustained serious or disabling injuries

If you've used our damages formula you know that your compensation can vary across a range. If the amount of compensation you can get is between $5,000 and $10,000, it makes no sense to get a lawyer. Even if the lawyer can increase your compensation by $2,000, he or she will collect $3,000 to $4,000 in fees, so you will actually receive less overall.

However, if your claim is worth over $10,000, the range for the potential compensation increases substantially. For example, if your medical bills total $20,000 (and in our day and age, that can easily be the cost of just one hospital stay), your compensation can range between $50,000 and $120,000 (or more!) Without a lawyer, you might get $50,000. With a lawyer, you might be looking at $100,000. Even if you end up paying the lawyer 30%, you will end up with $70,000 -- which is a considerable improvement.
